It is officially back to school season. However, students are preparing a little differently this year. Some students won’t be going to the classroom. Others will pack their masks and hand sanitizer to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In preparation for the year, Fountain Hills Unified School District announced their COVID-19 reopening plan.
School Start Date
FHUSD will start the school year virtually and then transition into the classroom. Instruction for students begins in a virtual environment on August 11th and tentatively transitions into the classroom on September 8th. *These dates are subject to change as plans for the state continue to change. Parents who do not wish to send their child to school can enroll them in the FHUSD Virtual Academy. Any students who enroll in the Virtual Academy but would later like to transfer to the classroom can do so. Elementary and middle school students can transfer at the end of the quarter, whereas high school must wait until the end of the semester. The description of these learning options can be found in the chart below.

Cleaning Protocol
FHUSD is also taking enhanced cleaning measures to ensure all students and faculty are safe on campus. Therefore, campuses will be disinfected twice a day. Staff will use a cleaning agent approved by the FDA. The two times in which the school will be cleaned will be around lunchtime and at the end of the day. Also, all classrooms will be provided with an EPA N-List registered disinfectant. This disinfectant can be used throughout the day as needed. Additionally, masks/facial coverings will be required for all students K-12 in accordance with the Maricopa County Supervisors. Acceptable face covering are cloth or paper masks, as well as gaiters.
Health Check
If your child is feeling sick or showing symptoms of a respiratory infection, it is recommended that they stay home. Students will have their temperatures taken by a non-contact thermometer upon entry into the school. However, students with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will be taken to the health office or an isolation room. Parents will be contacted and need to pick up their child immediately.
